Dominic (or Dominique) Bouhours was a French Jesuit, born in 1702. He entered the Society of Jesus at age 16 and spent much of his live as an essayist, historian, and critic. His biography of Francis Xavier first appeared in 1679 and appeared in English almost two centuries later. A volume of Xavier’s letters translated into English is available at Jesuit Sources.
